Harold Nicolson has said this book is a payment of debt of gratitude for all the years of information and pleasure from reading Sainte-Beuve. This book doesn’t lay claim to contain much original material. In Harold’s book he tells the story of a strange,unhappy, poet and critic. Sainte-Beuve had many friendships and love affairs that ended in disaster. When he gave a lecture, riots would erupt. Nicolson felt sympathy and compassion for a so gifted man, who never achieved love or letters. At the end Nicolson felt to understand everything about someone would allow you to forgive everything about that person. Nicolson said this book was a manual for the unsuccessful.
