English summary: To adequately pay tribute to Philipp Schaff, the different building blocks of his theological thinking, which originated in Lutheran orthodoxy, supranaturalism, idealistic romantic evolutionary theory, and critical rationalism, must be considered in combination with one another. He was no systematic theologian who analysed and critically evaluated each of these elements individually. Rather, he shaped out of them a universal vision of Christian eschatology, culminating at the end of all time. And his vision was always directed towards the Atlantic horizon, where he sought to link up the German theology with the emergent American theology; he developed great expectations for the future of Americaas the place where a second Reformation would take place.

German description: Um Philipp Schaff angemessen w|rdigen zu können, m|ssen die unterschiedlichen Bausteine seines theologischen Denkens, die aus lutherischer Orthodoxie, Supranaturalismus, idealistisch-romantischer Entwicklungslehre und kritischem Rationalismus stammen, miteinander bedacht werden. Er war kein systematischer Theologe, der diese Elemente im Einzelnen analysiert und kritisch bewertet hätte. Er formte aus ihnen vielmehr eine universale Vision der eschatologischen Entwicklung des Christentums bis zu ihrer Vollendung am Ende der Zeiten. Und er sah das immer in einem atlantischen Horizont, indem er die damals bestimmende deutsche mit der aufstrebenden amerikanischen Theologie zu verbinden suchte und grosse Erwartungen f|r die Zukunft Amerikas als Ort einer zweiten Reformation entwickelte.
